USB audio interface (2-4 channel)
Hardware that connects microphones and instruments to your computer, converting analog signals to digital audio. Its preamps and converters determine recording quality more than almost anything else in your signal chain.
What to look for
- 1At least 2 XLR inputs with phantom power for condenser mics
- 224-bit/48kHz recording minimum (higher doesn't matter for most projects)
- 3Direct monitoring feature to hear yourself without computer delay
- 4USB-C or Thunderbolt connection for reliable, fast data transfer
Skip
- Interfaces with only 1/8" inputs (can't use professional mics)
- Models requiring external power supplies unless you need portability
- 4+ channels if you're only recording 1-2 sources (costs more, complicates workflow)
Used for: Recording podcast interviews · Capturing neighborhood oral histories · Multi-track music recording · Field recording with quality microphones
