Infrared thermometer
A non-contact thermometer that reads surface temperature instantly from a distance using an infrared sensor. Shows temperature differentials invisible to touch and gives repeatable measurements without contaminating what you're measuring.
What to look for
- 1Temperature range covering -50°F to 500°F minimum for household/craft use
- 2Response time under 1 second for quick scanning
- 3Distance-to-spot ratio of at least 12:1 (measures a 1" area from 12" away)
- 4Adjustable emissivity if measuring shiny/reflective surfaces
Skip
- Medical forehead thermometers (different tech, narrow range)
- Models without laser pointer (hard to know what you're actually measuring)
Used for: Checking wax temperature during candle making · Measuring heat distribution in passive heating/cooling systems · Verifying cooking temperatures without contamination · Finding insulation gaps and thermal bridges
