Digital pH meter
An electronic probe that measures acidity levels in food and liquids, essential for safe fermentation and canning. Takes guesswork out of whether pickles, kombucha, or sauerkraut have developed enough acid to prevent botulism.
What to look for
- 1±0.1 pH accuracy minimum (±0.01 is better for hydroponics)
- 2Automatic temperature compensation (ATC)—temperature affects readings
- 3Comes with calibration powders or solutions (pH 4.0 and 7.0 at minimum)
- 4Waterproof rating if testing liquids frequently
- 5Replaceable probe (eventually all electrodes wear out)
Skip
- Meters without calibration solutions—you'll need to buy them separately anyway
- Models requiring constant recalibration (check reviews for "drift")
- Paper test strips for fermentation—not precise enough for safety decisions
Used for: Testing ferment readiness and safety · Verifying canning acidity levels · Monitoring hydroponic nutrient solutions · Checking sourdough starter development
