Bookbinding awl
A sharp metal needle with a handle, designed to punch clean holes through stacked paper for sewing signatures together. The right tool prevents torn pages and uneven spacing.
What to look for
- 1Wooden or ergonomic handle that won't slip when you apply pressure
- 2Steel needle at least 2" long to reach through multiple paper layers
- 3Fine point (1–2mm diameter) for precise holes that don't weaken paper
- 4Protective cap or cork for the point when stored
Skip
- Thick awls meant for leather—they tear paper and make holes too large for thread
- Handles shorter than 3" that cramp your hand during repetitive punching
Used for: Punching signature holes for Japanese or Coptic binding · Creating evenly-spaced holes without tearing paper · Hand-sewing books or journals
