Alum powder (aluminum sulfate or potassium aluminum sulfate)

White crystalline powder that chemically bonds plant dyes to fabric, making colors permanent and wash-resistant. Without it, natural dyes rinse out after the first wash.

What to look for

  1. 1Food-grade potassium alum (safer for skin contact than aluminum sulfate)
  2. 2Fine granulated texture dissolves easily in water
  3. 3At least 4 oz for multiple dyeing sessions
  4. 4Resealable packaging to prevent moisture absorption

Skip

  • Large restaurant-size quantities unless teaching workshops regularly
  • Aluminum sulfate if doing skin-contact items like scarves

Used for: Mordanting fabric before natural dyeing · Making botanical prints permanent · Preparing fiber for plant-based colors · Teaching dye workshops
