Step-by-Step Guide

Choose your urban hunting ground (30 minutes before): Select a 1-2 mile radius neighborhood with diverse architecture—think downtown districts, historic neighborhoods, or arts districts. Scout on Google Street View first to identify potential hotspots like murals, interesting storefronts, or architectural contrasts.

Gear check and settings prep (10 minutes): Charge your camera or smartphone to 100%. Set to manual or priority mode if available. Shoot in RAW format for editing flexibility. Bring a backup battery. Test your camera in various lighting conditions before leaving.

Warm-up shots—Architectural geometry (20 minutes): Capture 5 shots featuring geometric patterns: repeating windows, fire escapes creating diagonals, building corners converging toward sky. Look up and down, not just straight ahead. Focus on symmetry, leading lines, and rule-of-thirds composition.

Human element series (30 minutes): Photograph 5 candid moments of city life: someone reading on a bench, workers on break, dog walkers, street vendors. Maintain respectful distance with zoom or crop later. Capture genuine emotion and authentic interactions, not posed shots.
