Refractor telescope (70mm)
An entry-level telescope with a lens at the front that gathers light for viewing planets and the moon. The 70mm aperture is the minimum size that shows real detail beyond what binoculars offer.
What to look for
- 170mm aperture or larger—smaller won't show enough detail to justify the bulk
- 2Focal length 400–700mm for a balance of magnification and field of view
- 3Sturdy adjustable tripod that doesn't wobble in light wind
- 4At least two eyepieces (low and medium magnification) included
- 5Smartphone adapter if you want to try basic astrophotography
Skip
- Tabletop models without a real tripod—they're too shaky for magnified views
- Advertised magnifications above 150×—atmospheric conditions limit real usability
Used for: Observing moon craters and phases · Spotting Jupiter's moons and Saturn's rings · Tracking bright planets across seasons · Learning to locate constellations with optical aid
