Pottery needle tool

A sharp steel needle set in a wooden handle, used to pierce clay for thickness checks, trim ragged edges, and score surfaces for joining. One of the first tools beginners actually need.

What to look for

  1. 1Needle length 2–3 inches (long enough to check bowl walls without knuckles hitting wet clay)
  2. 2Securely embedded needle (shouldn't wiggle in handle)
  3. 3Comfortable wooden or cork handle (you'll grip it wet and slippery)
  4. 4Needle sharp enough to pierce cleanly without dragging

Skip

  • Multi-tool sets where the needle is too short or flimsy
  • Plastic handles (get slippery and uncomfortable during long sessions)

Used for: Checking pot wall thickness as you throw · Trimming uneven rims while the wheel spins · Scoring clay for handle attachment · Popping air bubbles before they ruin a piece
