Piezo contact microphone

A transducer that picks up vibrations through direct surface contact rather than airborne sound. Converts mechanical vibrations into electrical signals for recording hidden sonic textures in solid objects.

What to look for

  1. 1impedance compatibility with your recorder (high-impedance for most field recorders)
  2. 2mounting method (adhesive backing, clip-on, bare disc)
  3. 3disc diameter (20mm for high frequencies, 35-41mm for bass/rumble)
  4. 4cable length (9ft+ reduces handling noise)
  5. 5number of sensors (multi-sensor units average out dead spots)

Skip

  • guitar-only pickups with built-in preamps (wrong impedance curve)
  • bare discs without any cable or mounting solution for first purchase

Used for: field recording · sound design · experimental music · acoustic exploration
