Natural sea sponge

Holds significantly more water than synthetic sponges and releases it gradually. The irregular texture blends seams and smooths surfaces without streaking or over-wetting clay.

What to look for

  1. 1Natural sea sponge (not synthetic)—the texture matters
  2. 2Palm-sized when dry (expands when wet)
  3. 3Dense enough to hold water but not so tight it won't release it
  4. 4Irregular surface texture for blending work

Skip

  • Synthetic sponges—they leave streaks and hold less water
  • Oversized sponges that are awkward to control with one hand

Used for: smoothing thrown pieces · blending hand-built seams · keeping clay hydrated during work · cleaning up fingerprints
