Moisture meter

Handheld device with metal pins that measures water content in wood and drywall by sending an electrical current through the material. Identifies rot and structural weakness before you trust your weight to it.

What to look for

  1. 1Pin-type meter with exposed metal probes at least 0.5 inches long
  2. 2Reading range from 5-40% moisture content for wood assessment
  3. 3Clear digital display readable in dim conditions
  4. 4Moisture reference chart showing danger thresholds (above 20% indicates rot risk)

Skip

  • Pinless meters for structural work—they don't penetrate surfaces deeply enough
  • Models without backlit displays for use in dark buildings

Used for: Testing floor joists before walking on them · Checking beam integrity in abandoned buildings · Assessing wall stability · Identifying water damage and rot zones
