Alum powder (mordant)

Potassium aluminum sulfate, a mineral powder that chemically bonds natural dyes to fabric. Without it, most plant-based colors wash out completely in one laundry cycle; with it, they become permanent and significantly brighter.

What to look for

  1. 1Food-grade or textile-grade purity (both work; food-grade is sometimes easier to find)
  2. 2Fine powder that dissolves easily in warm water
  3. 3At least 8oz/225g—treats 2–3 pounds of fabric, enough for multiple dye sessions
  4. 4Clear labeling as 'alum' or 'potassium alum' (not aluminum sulfate, which is different)

Skip

  • Ammonium alum (a different chemical—works but requires more careful handling)
  • Pre-mixed mordant 'kits' that cost 3× as much for the same active ingredient

Used for: pre-treating fabric before natural dyeing to make colors permanent · intensifying color vibrancy from foraged plant dyes · preparing cloth for eco-printing or botanical contact dyeing · teaching natural dye workshops with reliable results
