Choose your first case. Pick a mystery that bugs you: a building that's always empty, a street name that makes no sense, a mural that keeps getting painted over. Write down everything you think you know, then mark what you can actually prove.

Build your evidence kit. Document everything with photos that include context—shoot the detail, then step back for the wide shot. Record ambient sound. Note the time, weather, and lighting. If you're tracking changes over time, shoot from the exact same position each visit.

Map the physical evidence. Walk a three-block radius around your mystery. Sketch the layout, mark businesses and their hours, note cameras and foot traffic patterns. Look for things that don't match the neighborhood: new construction next to decay, expensive cars on broke streets, fresh paint on condemned buildings.

Interview without interrogating. Talk to people who occupy the space daily: delivery drivers, corner store clerks, dog walkers at 6 AM. Ask open questions about change over time. 'How long have you worked here?' opens more doors than 'Do you know what that building was?' People remember disruptions better than constants.

Cross-reference public records. Property records, liquor licenses, and building permits are public in most cities. Match what the paperwork says to what you see on the ground. The gaps between official reality and street reality? That's where stories hide.

Build your timeline. Use architectural clues, business directories, old phone books, and dated graffiti to reconstruct what happened when. That boarded window has newspapers from 2019 stuffed in the cracks. The tag under the tag under the tag tells you about crew turnover. Layers reveal sequence.

Test your theory. Once you have a hypothesis, walk it backward. If that building was a jazz club in the '70s, there should be evidence: old permits, mentions in neighborhood newspapers, maybe acoustic tiles still visible through broken windows. Good investigations prove themselves through multiple data points.

Document your findings. Write up your investigation like you're explaining it to someone who's never seen the location. Include your photos as evidence, mark dead ends you pursued, note what you couldn't confirm. Post it online with proper context—other urban investigators will add details you missed.
