Step-by-Step Guide

1

Find a local orienteering course or park with trails (check orienteeringusa.org or local outdoor recreation sites for permanent courses in your area)

2

Gather your supplies: compass, local trail/orienteering map, water, and smartphone for safety backup

3

Study your map before starting—identify the legend, scale, contour lines, and magnetic north

4

Practice taking a compass bearing: point the direction-of-travel arrow at your target, rotate the bezel until the orienting arrow aligns with the compass needle

5

Start at the designated beginning point and locate your first control point on the map

6

Use terrain association: match features you see (hills, streams, trails) with symbols on your map

7

Navigate to each control point in order, using both map reading and compass bearings

8

At each control point, verify you're in the correct location by checking surrounding terrain features

9

Record or photograph each control marker as proof of completion

10

Complete the course by returning to the finish point, then reflect on which navigation techniques worked best for you
