Get lost on purpose—then find your way back like a pro.
Master the ancient art of map and compass navigation by completing an orienteering course in nature.
Orienteering is the ultimate navigation challenge that combines physical fitness, mental problem-solving, and outdoor exploration. Armed with just a detailed topographic map and a compass, you'll navigate through unfamiliar terrain to find specific control points, testing your ability to read landscapes, calculate distances, and make split-second route decisions. This centuries-old sport originated in Scandinavian military training and has evolved into a beloved outdoor pursuit that sharpens both body and mind. Whether you're racing against the clock or taking a leisurely pace to soak in nature, orienteering offers a unique way to explore parks, forests, and natural areas you might never otherwise discover. Unlike GPS-dependent navigation, traditional orienteering builds genuine wilderness skills and spatial awareness that could prove invaluable in any outdoor adventure. You'll learn to interpret contour lines, identify terrain features, and develop an intuitive sense of direction that transforms how you experience the natural world.
Find a local orienteering club or event through the Orienteering USA website, or create your own course at a large park with trails
Gather your equipment: orienteering compass, topographic map (many clubs provide course maps), comfortable hiking shoes, and water
Study the map legend and symbols before starting—learn to identify features like hills, valleys, cliffs, water bodies, and man-made structures
Practice taking compass bearings at home: hold the compass flat, point the direction-of-travel arrow toward your target, rotate the bezel until the orienting arrow aligns with the magnetic needle
At the starting point, orient your map to north using your compass, identify your current location, and locate the first control point marker
Plan your route considering terrain difficulty, distance, and obstacles—the straight line isn't always the fastest path
Navigate to the first control point using a combination of compass bearings, map reading, and terrain association (matching what you see with map features)
At each control point, use the special punch or record the code to prove you found it, then immediately locate the next destination on your map
Continue navigating through all control points in the designated order, keeping track of time and adjusting your strategy as needed
Return to the finish point and record your total time—reflect on what navigation techniques worked well and what you'd improve next time
