Woodworking chisels
Beveled steel blades for removing wood precisely by hand. Sharp chisels teach you proper cutting technique and grain direction; dull ones just teach you to force things.
What to look for
- 1Start with 3–4 sizes: 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1" covers most beginner work
- 2Hardened steel that holds an edge (look for Rc 58+ hardness ratings)
- 3Handles designed to be struck with a mallet, not just hand pressure
- 4Flat backs (not hollow-ground) so you can actually sharpen them
Skip
- Sets with 10+ chisels—you won't use most sizes for years
- Super-cheap chisels that won't hold an edge between sharpenings
