Waterproof ripstop tarp (8x10 ft)

A rectangular waterproof sheet for practicing shelter construction and learning rope rigging. Significantly tougher than hardware store tarps so it survives repeated setup and teardown while you learn knots.

What to look for

  1. 1Reinforced corner grommets (metal, not plastic) that won't tear out during practice
  2. 2At least 12 mil thickness so it doesn't rip the first time you stake it down wrong
  3. 3Grommets spaced 18–24 inches along all edges for flexibility in tying configurations
  4. 4Heat-sealed seams rather than stitched (water actually stays out)

Skip

  • Anything labeled 'light duty'—you need practice material that tolerates mistakes
  • Tarps with only corner grommets (limits what shelter shapes you can build)

Used for: Building rain-worthy practice shelters · Testing knot strength under tension · Learning emergency rigging configurations · Weatherproofing skill drills
