Inking plate (acrylic or glass)

A smooth, non-porous surface where you roll out ink to an even, thin layer before transferring it to your brayer. Gives you control over ink consistency that squeezing from the tube directly onto the block never will.

What to look for

  1. 1At least 8×6 inches—smaller plates force you to reload constantly
  2. 2Acrylic 1/8-inch thick or tempered glass; both clean easily and last years
  3. 3Perfectly smooth surface with no texture or grain
  4. 4Clear/transparent helps you see ink color and coverage

Skip

  • Textured cutting mats marketed as "inking plates"—texture transfers to your print
  • Thin plastic sheets that warp or flex when you press the brayer
