Ferro rod with striker
A metal rod that throws hot sparks when scraped with a steel striker. Teaches reliable fire-starting mechanics that work in wet conditions when matches won't.
What to look for
- 1Rod at least ½" diameter and 3" long for abundant spark production
- 2Striker with sharp 90-degree edge (not rounded) made from hardened steel
- 3Attached lanyard holes on both pieces so you don't lose them
- 4Rod material that sparks at 5,400°F (ferrocerium blend, not magnesium)

- Thin pencil-sized rods under ¼" that wear out quickly
- Soft strikers that dull after a few uses
