Bone folder (real bone)

A smooth bone tool that creases paper and book cloth with burnished precision—the surface polishes folds as it presses, while plastic versions skip and leave shiny marks. Essential for crisp, professional-looking bindings.

What to look for

  1. 1Real bone (usually cattle bone), not plastic—plastic slips and mars paper
  2. 25–7 inches long with one pointed end and one rounded end
  3. 3Smooth, polished surface free of rough spots
  4. 4Comfortable grip diameter (about pencil-thick)

Skip

  • Plastic "bone folders" that slide instead of burnish
  • Teflon folders marketed for bookbinding—they don't polish like bone does

Used for: creasing fold lines in thick paper · burnishing book cloth onto cardboard · scoring paper before folding · smoothing pasted surfaces in bookbinding
