Baseplate orienteering compass

A compass with a clear rectangular base that lets you align it with map features and take accurate bearings. The rotating bezel and direction-of-travel arrow make it precise for navigation practice.

What to look for

  1. 1Clear baseplate with ruler markings along edges for measuring map distances
  2. 2Rotating bezel marked in 2-degree increments (minimum)
  3. 3Orienting arrow and lines inside the bezel housing
  4. 4Direction-of-travel arrow clearly marked on the baseplate

Skip

  • Button compasses or lensatic compasses—wrong tool for map work
  • Compasses without baseplates—you can't align them to maps
  • Cheap needles that stick or respond slowly

Used for: taking bearings from maps · following compass headings in the field · measuring map distances · orienteering course navigation
